Nick Clegg, Meta’s head of policy and communications, has now take up the position of president of global affairs. The change appears to be less about increasing Clegg’s responsibilities. But it seems more about putting him in charge of Meta’s main policy choices and relations with governments (rather than CEO Mark Zuckerberg or COO Sheryl Sandberg).
“We need a senior leader at the level of myself (for our products) and Sheryl (for our business) who can lead and represent us for all of our policy issues globally,” Meta owner writes in a public statement accompanying Clegg’s ascendance. “Nick will now lead our company on all our policy matters, including how we interact with governments as they consider adopting new policies and regulations. As well as how we make the case publicly for our products and our work.”
Responsibilities Of Nick Clegg
Clegg’s responsibilities for Meta’s communications and policy will remain the same, according to Facebook. In his new post, he will report to both Zuckerberg and Sandberg, Meta’s chief operating officer, rather than just Sandberg. Before joining Facebook in 2018, Clegg worked as a politician in the United Kingdom. Where he served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2010 to 2015.
The change also appears to be aimed at transferring more of Zuckerberg’s focus and accountability for big policy decisions to Clegg. As he had been conducting much of that work in the open. The idea, allegedly, is to allow Zuckerberg more time to assist Meta realize its metaverse dreams. While spending less time testifying before congressional committees about how Facebook moderates or does not moderate content.
“The work we do at Meta matters to a lot of people around the world,” says Mark Zuckerberg. In the midst of many disputes about society and technology, Zuckerberg firmly said that he could not think of a better individual to take over as president of global affairs.
